WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Kutztown University volleyball team capped off the weekend with a 3-1 loss against West Chester on Saturday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division battle at Hollinger Field House.
The Golden Bears (1-19, 0-7 PSAC East) picked up a set win and almost opened with a second, but a fourth set surge from the Golden Rams (9-10, 2-5 PSAC East) sealed a win, snapping their four-game skid and earning a second conference victory on their season.
KU emerged from the third set victorious, 25-23, after a back-and-forth series between the two teams fell in favor of the Golden Bears. Kutztown took advantage of several late West Chester attacking errors, and a pair of kills from freshman Macy Shewmake (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) capped off the win and kept their hopes alive.
Kutztown's attack was led by sophomore Sarah Hess (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) and freshman Christina Lockett (Gaithersburg, Md./Tuscarora), who recorded nine kills apiece. Libero Lexi McLanahan (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg Area) led the team with 14 digs and three service aces, while Hess led the team with five blocks (one solo) on the afternoon.
Shewmake, Bryanna Carter (Abingdon, Md./Edgewood) and Grace White (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) managed six kills each, and Emma Baldridge (Damascus, Md./Damascus) tallied 17 assists and a pair of aces for Kutztown.
Kutztown returns to Keystone Arena to finish off their non-conference slate with a match against Jefferson on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. The Golden Bears will resume PSAC East Division play with a home contest against East Stroudsburg on Friday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m.
