STRATFORD, N.J. -- The 22nd-ranked Kutztown University women's bowling team collected a pair of best-of-seven Baker format wins in bracket play Sunday to bring home a fifth-place team finish at the New Jersey Open.
The day didn't get off on the right foot for the Golden Bears, who had to overcome travel issues getting to 30 Strikes Lanes. After arriving, it took time for the team to get into competition mode once play began.
Felician got the better of KU for the third time this weekend with a 4-0 sweep but the Maroon and Gold bounced back with victories in each of its last two matches. The highlight of the day came from sophomore
Sydney Snyder (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic), who converted an improbable 7-10 split.
Ally Sipe (York, Pa./Central York), Snyder,
Megan Hanaway (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township),
Chloe Sromovski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) and
Madison Brenneman (York, Pa./Central York) made up coach
Angela Reynolds' lineup for the final two matches. They responded with a top game of 216 in the opening game against Wagner, before going on to sweep the Seahawks, 4-0.
Kutztown (26-14) took on Long Island University in the fifth-place match and got the better of the Sharks for the second time in as many days.
LIU grabbed the first game, 200-163, before the teams rolled matching 206 scorse in game two. KU took over from there, winning the next four to secure the victory, 4.5-1.5. Game three turned out to be the Bears' best of the match with a 215 score, and Kutztown was composed in tight games. The final two games were decided by seven pins or less, but KU emerged with a 181-180 win in game five and a 207-200 win in game six.
The Golden Bears travel to Limerick, Pa., for the Chestnut Hill Griffin Baker Classic next Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 3-4.
