STRATFORD, N.J. -- The matchups weren't kind to Kutztown on Saturday at the New Jersey Open. The 22nd-ranked Golden Bears went 1-4 in traditional play and head into Sunday's best-of-seven Baker matches fifth in the team standings.
Based on the standings following Friday's Baker matches, the Golden Bears drew Felician in their first match of the day. The Golden Falcons are receiving votes in the latest NTCA Poll.
Megan Hanaway (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) produced a team-high 174 and
Madison Brenneman (York, Pa./Central York) rolled a 169, but it wasn't enough as Felician grabbed an 854-772 victory.
Kutztown (24-13) rebounded with a 900-763 win over Long Island University. Hanaway was at the forefront of KU's efforts again with a 214, the team's highest game of the day. Brenneman and
Chloe Sromovski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) provided supporting 188 and 181 scores, respectively.
The Golden Bears came painfully close to picking up two more wins but just couldn't get the results they were looking for.
Meghan Ripley (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) stepped up with a 190 and Sromovski had a 187 in an 885-865 setback to Monmouth. Brenneman and
Sydney Snyder (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) rolled 192 to share team-high honors in a rematch with Felician that the Golden Falcons claimed by just eight pins, 865-857.
Behind Snyder's 213 and strong scores from Brenneman (189), Hanaway (188) and Sromovski (187), Kutztown closed with a Saturday-best 946 against Wilmington (Del.). Unfortunately, the Wildcats were also at their best and produced a tournament-high 1,035 for their second 1,000+ score of the weekend.
Kutztown's 8,662 total pins and 173.2 average are good for fifth, just 36 pins behind Long Island for fourth. The Golden Bears close out competition at 30 Strikes Lanes on Sunday.
