Golden Bears break through against Moravian for first win

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- The Kutztown University men's tennis team took care of Moravian, 7-0, Saturday afternoon for its first win of the 2023-24 season.

KU was in control from start to finish, claiming all three doubles matches before taking all six singles flights in straight sets.

Freshmen Dang Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam) and Henrique Rocha (Jaticua, Brazil/Escola SEB Maceio) got it started for the Maroon and Gold with a 6-2 win over Zachary Lebby and Matt Labosky at third doubles.

Gonzalo Barcelo (San Pedro, Argentina/Nuestra Senora del Socorro) and Joaquin Perez (Pachuca, Mexico/Escuela Americana) secured the doubles point for the hosts with a 6-3 win over Shayaan Farhad and Anthony Ronca at No. 1, with Sebastian Arizpe (Puebla, Mexico/Colegio Humboldt de Puebla) and Justin Gincauskas (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park Secondary) finishing off the doubles sweep by a 6-3 count over the Greyhounds' (1-2) Wyatt Marshall and Ronny Pimentel Ferrer at No. 2.

Kutztown (1-2) kept its good play rolling in singles, where Nguyen defeated Marshall 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 to put the Bears ahead 2-0. Barcelo followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Farhad at No. 1 and Perez downed Ronca 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 to put the match out of reach.

The Bears finished off their counterparts by getting a 6-1, 6-3 win from Rocha at No. 5, a 6-2, 6-2 triumph from Neal Devkaran (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic) at No. 6 and a 6-2, 6-3 victory from Emmitt Robinson (Ingersoll, Ontario/Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute) at No. 4.
