NEW HAVEN, Conn. – For the third straight game to open up the 2023 season, Kutztown field hockey did not allow a shot on goal and recorded its third shutout in defeating Southern Connecticut State 5-0 on Sunday afternoon in New Haven, Conn.
Â
It was the second win in as many days for the Golden Bears (3-0 overall), who took down Saint Michael's 8-0 on Saturday and New Haven 2-0 in the home and season opener last Thursday, Aug. 31.
Â
Breann Craley (York, Pa./Central York) and
Erin Gonzalez (East Earl, Pa./Garden Spot) both netted two goals, the first of the season for Gonzalez, and
Megan Doyle (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) added the fifth goal, also her first on the year. KU scored twice in the first quarter and twice in the second to stake to a 4-0 halftime lead. The third goal came in the third quarter.
Â
The Maroon and Gold defense was at its best once again, not allowing a shot and blanking the Owls. The defensive unit has allowed just one shot all season so far.
Mia Kepler (Wall Township, N.J./Wall),
Ella Weidenhammer (Newport, Pa./Newport) and
Alaina Telenko (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) all shared time in the cage, but were not forced into action. KU outshot SCSU 27-0 with 20 of those shots coming on cage.
Â
Jillian Buchman (Drums, Pa./Hazleton) and
Greenleigh McGehee (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) both had an assist in the victory.
Â
Kutztown will return home for two games on back-to-back days next weekend as it will host Bentley on Friday, Sept. 8, at 3 p.m., followed by a game with Mansfield at 2 p.m., on Saturday. Both games from Andre Reed stadium are non-conference games.
