Golden Bears win Ursinus Spring Invitational, Donnini medalist

| By:
READING, Pa. -- Playing closer to Kutztown's campus than that of host Ursinus College, the Golden Bear women's golf team used a 1-2 finish from Olivia Donnini (Wapwallopen, Pa./Crestwood) and Alexis Peet (Greentown, Pa./Wallenpaupack) to capture the Ursinus Spring Invitational at Manor Golf Club Thursday afternoon.

Donnini topped the 18-player field with a career-best round of 82. The senior from Wapwallopen, Pa., collected a birdie on No. 2, a 175-yard par 3, and eight pars. Donnini did not shoot worse than bogey on the front nine, making the turn with a 4-over par 40.

Peet kept close pace with her teammate to also shoot a career-low round with an 84, good for runner-up honors. Peet carded four pars on the front nine and a matching number on the back.

Grace Babinchak (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) shot 90 with three pars to place sixth in Kutztown's first tournament of the spring, while Gabby Cohen (Jeffersonville, N.Y./Sullivan West) tied for seventh with a 93 on the 5,096, par 70 course. Cohen birdied hole No. 1, a par 4 playing at 252 yards.

Rounding out the Bears' entries was Alexis Verdes (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Township), who shot a career-best 99 for 11th place. Verdes notched a birdie on No. 10, a 133-yard par 3, along with four pars.

Kutztown won the tournament going away with a combined 69-over 349. Jefferson placed second at 387 (+107), with host Ursinus third at 421 (+141) and East Stroudsburg fourth at 438 (+158).

The Golden Bears are back on the course early next week for the two-day Dr. Edwin Cottrell Invitational hosted by West Chester at the Penn Oaks Golf Club. Opening round play begins at 1 p.m. Monday, April 3.
