Golden Bears win fifth straight over Shippensburg to even PSAC East record

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Kutztown women's tennis swept doubles play and captured 5-of-6 singles flights to defeat Shippensburg for the fifth consecutive time, 6-1, in a PSAC East match Wednesday afternoon at the Keystone Courts.

The Maroon and Gold won all three doubles flights in convincing fashion, dropping just two games along the way. KU's third pairing of Brianna Wendling (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) and Angela Moncavage (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) shutout Avery Wissinger and Katelyn Hanft, 6-0, to give the Bears an early leg up.

Ava Lewis (Camp Hill, Pa./East Pennsboro) and Jess Marks (Allentown, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) followed with a 6-1 victory over Corrine Markovich and Brooklynn Rupert at No. 1 to clinch the available point for the hosts. Kutztown (3-6, 1-1 PSAC East) made it 3-for-3 just for good measure when Sarah Lazarchak (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) and Jessika Klo (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) defeating Kendall Winters and Brighid Cantwell, 6-1, at No. 2.

The first four singles decisions all went Kutztown's way, giving it the five points needed to put result to rest. Moncavage was first to win her match, taking care of Hanft 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6. Klo was just as impressive in a 6-0, 6-2 win over Wissinger at No. 5.

Additional straight set victories by Lazarchak at No. 2 (6-1, 6-0 over Rupert) and Lewis at No. 1 (6-3, 6-4 over Markovich) made it 5-0 Golden Bears.

Shippensburg (1-5, 0-1 PSAC East) avoided the shutout when Cantwell held off Wendling in a three-set thriller 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, but Kutztown closed with a win from Marks 7-6 (4), 3-6, 7-5 at No. 3.

The Golden Bears return to the Keystone Courts tomorrow to make up last week's postponed non-conference match against Penn State Harrisburg at 3 p.m.
