KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown bats woke up when they needed to as KU used late-inning rallies to take a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division twin bill over Lock Haven Wednesday afternoon at North Campus Field.
Â
The Golden Bears (11-11 overall, 5-1 PSAC East) have now evened their overall record and have won three PSAC games in-a-row, all coming within the last two days.
Â
KU scored the game-winning run in the 10th inning of a 4-3 opening victory and then tallied three runs in its last two innings at the plate to break a deadlock and win 6-3 in the nightcap.
Â
Haley Gravish (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg) earned wins in both games, coming on in relief, and improved her record to 7-2 inside the circle.
Kate Ostaszewski (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) paced the offense by going 4-for-9 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Brianna Stocklin (Deptford, N.J./Deptford Township),
Hannah Reimel (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) and
Sarah Harvey (Swanton, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) all had three hits between the two games.
Â
Kutztown hits the road in its next games for the first conference road games of the season as KU plays at Bloomsburg on Friday, March 31, with game one beginning at 2:30 p.m.
Â
Kutztown 4, Lock Haven 3 (10 inn.)
Â
The Kutztown bats finally broke through in the bottom of the 10th inning with the game-winning run coming from the legs of Reimel. The junior right fielder, who started the inning on second base, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Sarah Harvat (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) and then raced home after a wild pitch that got away from Lock Haven starter Jada Schellhammer.
Â
The Bald Eagles scored twice in their first at-bats to quickly jump out to a 2-0 lead, but KU answered in its first at-bats with back-to-back two-out doubles by Ostaszewski and Harvey to put the Golden Bears on the board.
Â
Kutztown tied the game in the bottom of the second. After three straight singles by Reimel, Harvat and
Alexa Stevens (Covington Township, Pa./North Pocono),
Jenna Piatkiewicz (Fogelsville, Pa./Parkland), making her fifth start of the season and first at North Campus Field, picked up her first RBI of her career on a fielder's choice to shortstop to put the score at 2-2.
Â
After a scoreless third, KU took its first lead when Stocklin doubled to left center field with two outs to bring around Harvat. Lock Haven tied the game back up at 3-3 thanks to an RBI double by Riley McClellan in the top of the fifth.
Â
The teams then traded scoreless innings for the next four before KU finally broke through in the 10th, its second double-digit-inning game this season and fourth extra inning game.
Â
Kutztown 6, Lock Haven 3
Â
Kutztown put up a three-spot in its first time at the plate and it all started with two outs. After the first two batters got out, Ostaszewski singled to center, stole second and scored on Harvey's single to left. Harvey, who ran to second on the throw home following her single, then scored on a
Brianna Hughes (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) double that was perfectly placed the opposite way down the right field line. Reimel followed up with a run-scoring single up the middle and KU went on top 3-0.
Â
Amanda Slabicki (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) was cruising along until the top of the fourth inning when Lock Haven got to the freshman with two runs. The Bald Eagles would tie the game in the fifth as the Maroon and Gold defense committed two errors.
Â
Ostaszewski singled home Stocklin in the bottom-half of the fifth to take back the lead. Kutztown then added some insurance with two runs in the sixth, highlighted by a
Kristin Geesey (Bainbridge, Pa./Elizabethtown) RBI sacrifice fly and a Stocklin RBI single.
