BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- After losing its spring debut last weekend, the Kutztown University men's tennis team bounced back with a victory over Moravian, 5-1, Saturday at the Timothy Breidegam Fieldhouse.
The Golden Bears (4-3) started doubles off strong as
Gonzalo Barcelo (San Pedro, Argentina/Nuestra Senora del Socorro) and
Joaquin Perez (Pachuca, Mexico/Escuela Americana) defeated Shayaan Farhad and Anthony Ronca, 8-1, at No. 1. The Greyhounds (9-2) took back some of the momentum with an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles, but KU quickly responded with an 8-5 comeback victory at No. 3 by
Lucas Cherniak (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Escuela Superior de Comercio Carlos Pellegrini) and
Jacob Bosler (Elkton, Md./Elkton) to take a 2-1 lead heading into the singles matches. Cherniak and Bosler trailed 5-2 before winning six straight games to close the match.
It was all Kutztown from that point forward. At first singles, Barcelo battled back from early deficits in the first and second sets to defeat Farhad 6-3, 6-2. After a tight first set, Perez pulled away in the second to defeat Ronca 7-6 (3), 6-1 at second singles.
With Kutztown up 4-1, freshman
Emmitt Robinson (Ingersoll, Ontario/Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute) had the opportunity to clinch the match for the Golden Bears at third singles. He would do just that, ripping a forehand winner on match point to take it 6-3, 7-5, and seal the victory for the Maroon and Gold.
The Golden Bears have now won their last two meetings against Moravian by a score of 5-1 and are up to four wins on the season heading into the start of conference play.
Due to weather, KU will no longer travel to Maryland during Spring Break. The Bears were slated to face Harford Community College in an exhibition match along with Goucher. Instead, Kutztown will be back in action next Saturday to open its PSAC slate on the road against Edinboro at 4 p.m.
