EDINBORO, Pa. -- Kutztown University men's tennis dropped its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener to host and defending conference champion Edinboro, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at the Edinboro Tennis Courts.
The Fighting Scots cruised at third doubles, but were tested by the Bears in the first and second flight matches. Despite staying in close contact, Kutztown couldn't close out a win to avoid dropping the doubles point to the hosts.
Sebastian Arizpe (Puebla, Mexico/Colegio Humboldt de Puebla) and
Justin Gincauskas (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park Secondary) took four games at No. 2 in a 6-4 defeat, with
Gonzalo Barcelo (San Pedro, Argentina/Nuestra Senora del Socorro) and
Joaquin Perez (Pachuca, Mexico/Escuela Americana) claiming three games in a 6-3 setback at No. 1.
Singles play was all Edinboro (8-3, 1-0), as the Fighting Scots took five matches in straight sets and won the sixth due to retirement.
Gincauskas forced an opening set tiebreaker against Finn Unger at No. 6 before falling 7-6 (5), 6-1. No. 3
Neal Devkaran (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic) won three games in each of his sets against Manav Sreekumar in a 6-3, 6-3 loss at No. 3. Arizpe was able to get three games off Thibault Dorval in the first set at No. 5, and
Emmitt Robinson (Ingersoll, Ontario/Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute) did the same in the second set against Gustavo Martins at No. 4.
Kutztown will turn around to face last year's league runners-up, Mercyhurst, in Erie Sunday at 1:45 p.m.
