Softball concludes play at Francis Marion Invitational

FLORENCE, S.C. – Brianna Stocklin (Deptford, N.J./Deptford Township) had a five-hit day and Sarah Harvey (Swanton, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) recorded four RBIs to lead No. 17 Kutztown softball in day two at the Francis Marion Invitational Sunday in Florence, S.C. KU lost to Adelphia 6-2 in game one and then fell to the host, Francis Marion, 5-4.

The Golden Bears (2-5 overall) dropped games against each team on Saturday in day one of the Invitational.

Stocklin finished the day 5-for-8 at the plate and scored two runs. Harvey had two hits combined in the two games, including four RBIs, and finished off the opener inside the circle. Haley Gravish (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg) and Amanda Slabicki (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) each threw three innings against the Panthers. Natalee Harvey (Swanton, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) started against the Patriots and threw a complete game.

Kutztown will now have about two-and-a-half weeks off before its next time out on the diamond when it will play at Virginia State on Friday, March 10, for two games beginning at 2 p.m. It will begin its annual spring break trip to Florida and a five-day, nine-game trip.

Adelphi 6, Kutztown 2

After a scoreless first two innings between the two teams, Adelphi got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the third innings off an RBI double. Following a scoreless fourth, KU not only scored its first run, but actually took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lexi Wescott (Phoenixville, Pa./Spring-Ford) led off with a walk and, then came around to score on a wild pitch two batters later. Naya Darnowski (Manchester, N.J./Manchester Township) then recorded a run-scoring groundout to second base.

Needing just three outs to earn the victory, Kutztown watched as the Panthers put together a five-run, top of the seventh as seven of the first eight batters reached base safely.

Francis Marion 5, Kutztown 4

Kutztown and Francis Marion wasted little time in runners crossing home plate as the teams combined for five runs in the opening inning.

Darnowski was hit by a pitch and Sarah Harvat (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) walked to put runners at first and second with one out to begin the game. Harvey then, ripped her second home run in as many days, a three-run shot to center field to put the Golden Bears on top 3-0.

The Patriots quickly answered in the bottom-half of the frame with four hits and two runs to cut their deficit to just one run.

Harvey earned her fourth RBI of the game via a sacrifice bunt as KU added to its lead and went up 4-2 in the top of the third. The score would remain that way until the bottom of the fifth when Francis Marion had three runners touch home to take its first lead of the game, and held on in the end, recording the final six outs.
