BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Freshman
Alejandra Vera (Manta, Ecuador/Unidad Educativa Particular) won her opening round singles match to lead Kutztown's entries in the 2023 PSAC Women's Tennis Individual Championships at Bloomsburg's Burt Reese Tennis Center, Sunday.
Vera drew Millersville's Chloe Abramowitz in the round of 32 and the two battled hard in an incredible match. Vera won the opening set 6-4, before Abramowitz answered with a 6-4 win of her own in the second. The deciding super tiebreaker went to Vera by a 10-8 score.
Vera faced off against Mercyhurst's Roisin Murphy with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line, but it was Murphy advancing in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
Also in the singles draw for the Maroon and Gold was fellow freshman
Bieke Roovers (Leiden, Netherlands/Leonardo College). Roovers also went to a super tiebreaker against Kasey Storkel of Seton Hill in the first round, but Storkel came out on top 5-7, 6-3, 10-4.
Sarah Lazarchak (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) and
Ava Lewis (Camp Hill, Pa./East Pennsboro) represented KU in the 16-team doubles draw. The duo dropped their opening match to Jennifer McDonald and Alexis Quackenbush of Bloomsburg, 8-1.
This weekend's tournament marked the close of Kutztown's fall season. The Golden Bears are schedule to resume play Feb. 23, against West Virginia Wesleyan.
