SCRANTON, Pa. -- First-year players
Bieke Roovers (Leiden, Netherlands/Leonardo College) and
Alejandra Vera (Manta, Ecuador/Unidad Educativa Particular) won together in doubles and took care of business individually, too, helping Kutztown to a 6-3 comeback win over Scranton on Wednesday at the Royal Courts.
The Golden Bears (3-2) needed to deliver in singles after dropping two of the three doubles flights, and they did just that.
Roovers whitewashed Brigid O'Mara at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0, while
Ava Lewis (Camp Hill, Pa./East Pennsboro) earned a commanding 6-0, 6-2 victory over Paige Hunt at No. 4.
Sarah Lazarchak (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) bested Olivia Sirico 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3,
Sierra Smart (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Taralyn Reilly at No. 5 and Vera defeated Daniella Wisniewski 7-5, 7-5 at No. 1 as the Bears rallied to take the match, which was played under NCAA Division III scoring rules with Scranton hosting.
Vera and Roovers captured an 8-4 win at first doubles over O'Mara and Kyleigh McNulty, but the Royals (0-3) responded with an 8-7 win at No. 2 and an 8-5 victory at No. 3 to take a 2-1 lead to singles, before Kutztown won 4-of-5 individual matches.
A few Kutztown players will travel to Bloomsburg this coming weekend to compete in the PSAC Individual Championships. The tournament, which features a singles and doubles bracket, was slated to start Saturday, Oct. 7, but with rain in the forecast, the tournament will now begin Sunday, Oct. 8, at 10 a.m.
