NEW CASTLE, Del. -- The Kutztown University women's bowling team won all four of its Baker matches during seeding rounds, Sunday, before falling to Felician 4-1 in the best-of-seven fifth-place match at the Bud Whitman Memorial.
Kutztown (7-2) posted consistent scores of 897, 897 and 896 in knocking off Chestnut Hill, LIU and Molloy, before using an 815 to beat Coppin State.
Coach
Angela Reynolds went with a lineup of
Ally Sipe (York, Pa./Central York),
Meghan Ripley (Bel Air, Md./Fallston),
Megan Hanaway (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township),
Madison Brenneman (York, Pa./Central York) and
Chloe Sromovski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) to start the day against the Griffins and her team responded by winning four of the five games, including a 202 in game two and a 211 in game five. The Golden Bears outpaced Chestnut Hill by 90 pins in an 897-807 victory.
Senior
Joanne Reitnour (Mahanoy City, Pa./Mahanoy Area) moved into the lineup against LIU in place of Sipe as KU continued its winning ways. The Bears were more consistent in their game-to-game scores despite not going over 200 in any of them. The result was another 897 score and a 54-pin victory (897-843).
Kutztown opened with a 214, but had to rally past a Molloy team that knocked the Bears out of last year's East Coast Conference Championship a match shy of the championship. The Lions outscored KU 204-166 in game two, but the Maroon and Gold responded with three straight wins to close out the match, 896-828.
In its final seeding match, KU got a 201 to start and handled Coppin State with ease, 815-738.
Kutztown was seeded fifth following Saturday's five traditional matches and Sunday's four Baker matches. Reynolds' team went up against sixth-seeded Felician, whom it beat Saturday, for fifth place. Felician got off to a fast start, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. KU extended the match with a 187-126 win in game four, but a match-high 219 helped the Golden Falcons close it out in five.
Sromovski, who turned in the fourth-best individual average during Saturday's traditional matches, was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Kutztown will now turn its attention to next weekend's Golden Bear Invite at Berks Lanes. Competition begins Saturday, Oct. 21, and concludes Sunday, Oct. 22.
