Kutztown ends skid in big way with road win at Shepherd

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Kutztown women's basketball was looking for some positive momentum to get going once again. After losing three consecutive games, KU found it, and then some as it raced out to a 15-point lead after the opening quarter and never looked back in taking down Shepherd 63-30 Saturday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference road game.

The Golden Bears (10-10 overall, 8-6 PSAC) had lost their previous three games, but halted that losing streak in a full team effort. All 11 Golden Bears that saw action scored, tying a season-high for KU. The team was led by a game-high 13 points out of Casey Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy). Leila Hurley (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Jim Thorpe) also finished in double figures with a season-high 10 points. Shannon Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) made her first career start and recorded nine points, four rebounds and two steals in tying a team-high with 21 minutes played. Abbey Hearn (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) also had nine points and four rebounds.

It's the fourth victory in-a-row over the Rams (0-19, 0-14).

Kutztown connected on 10 three-pointers, shooting 38.5% (10-for-26) from beyond the arc. KU shot 39.2% (20-of-51) overall. The defense stepped up and forced Shepherd into a poor shooting night as it finished at just a 22.0% (11-for-50) clip and 26.7% (4-of-15) from three.

The Maroon and Gold outscored the Rams 20-5 in the first quarter. They actually found themselves behind 5-3 just 3:34 into the game, but ended the quarter scoring 17 straight points. KU kept its foot on the gas in the second quarter, going on a 19-2 run in that 10-minute span.

Naia Pulliam (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) tallied five points and four rebounds. Zara Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) contributed five points and Sydney Pierson (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) added four. Noelle Baxter (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood), Olivia Smelas (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Jim Thorpe), Skyler West (York Springs, Pa./Bermudian Springs) and Bella Arcuri (Fallsington, Pa./Pennsbury) all finished with two points.

Kutztown will now look start a new win streak with multiple wins in-a-row when it plays at West Chester in its next game on Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 5:30 p.m. KU defeated the Golden Rams (13-7, 10-4) 73-57 back on Jan. 7, but since, WCU has won six games in-a-row and is currently in second place in the division, two games ahead of the Golden Bears.
