Kutztown suffers setback to Bloomsburg

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown women's basketball erased a halftime deficit to take a third quarter lead, but could not hold on, dropping a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division game to Bloomsburg, 66-52, Wednesday evening inside Keystone Arena.
 
The Golden Bears (9-10 overall, 7-6 PSAC) fell for the third time in-a-row overall and have now lost four of their last five against the Huskies (7-10, 5-8), dating back to the 2019-20 season.
 
Zara Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) led KU with 17 points, two off her season-high. She added five rebounds, two assists and three steals. Naia Pulliam (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) also finished in double figures with 11 points and added four rebounds, making her fifth start of the season.
 
Bloomsburg shot 46.7% (21-for-45) from the floor compared to 30.8% (16-for-52) for Kutztown. KU also made just four 3-pointers in 15 attempts. Bloomsburg also went 20-of-23 (87%) from the free-throw line, while KU went 16-for-21 (76.2%).
 
The Huskies opened the game scoring six of the first seven points in the first 2:14, but the Maroon and Gold finished the quarter on a 12-7 run to tie the game at 13-13 after one. Bloom went ahead 25-18 before Kutztown finished off the half with five straight points and trailed 25-23 at halftime. The Golden Bears would then take their first lead of the game on a three-point play by Casey Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) just 0:12 in. There were three lead changes before Bloomsburg finished the third quarter leading 45-37. KU got as close as six points twice, but could not complete the comeback attempt.
 
Remolde finished with seven points and three rebounds. Abbey Hearn (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) had eight points and four rebounds. Annie Whalen (Ivyland, Pa./Archbishop Wood) tallied five points and six boards. Sydney Pierson (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) rounded out the scoring with four points and added a career-high four steals.
 
Kutztown hits the road for the first time in a week and will take on Shepherd this Saturday, Jan. 28, at 1 p.m.
