DEPTFORD, N.J -- Kutztown put forth one of its best days of the season at the Northeast Classic, Saturday. The Golden Bears went toe-to-toe with four nationally-ranked teams and picked up victories over No. 17 Tulane and Mount Aloysius as part of a 2-3 day.
Â
Three Bears rolled three 200+ games against No. 20 Central Missouri, led by
Megan Hanaway's (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) 213, but a stellar 1105 score from the Jennies was too much for Kutztown (20-20) to overcome. It was the highest team score by a KU opponent the entire day.
Chloe Sromovski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) backed Hanaway up with a 207,
Ally Sipe (York, Pa./Central York) registered a 203 and
Madison Brenneman (York, Pa./Central York) was strong, too, with a 192.
Â
Angela Reynolds' team didn't allow the opening loss to deter them. With Brenneman's 201 paving the way, Kutztown downed 17th-ranked Tulane, 934-869, for its second win over a ranked opponent this season and first since beating then-No. 12 Delaware State back at the Bud Whitman Memorial Oct. 9. Sromovski had a 197 in the win over the Green Wave, while Hanaway was at 187 and new addition to the lineup
Jordan Dean (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) rolled a 180.
Â
Sromovski bowled her second of three 200+ games against No. 23 Wisconsin-Whitewater, but the Bears' overall performance was a touch under where it had been the first two matches, allowing the Warhawks to walk away with a 924-865 victory.
Â
Kutztown ramped back up to face the nation's top-ranked team, McKendree. Brenneman and Sromovski furnished matching 213s, Dean registered a 198 and
Sydney Snyder (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) a 194 as the Bears enjoyed their highest-scoring match of the day with a 988. It was nearly enough to take down No. 1, but McKendree escaped by 45 pins, 1033-988.
Â
The Golden Bears finished with a 787-680 win over Mount Aloysius, where Sromovski rolled a match-high 180.
Â
Sromovski totaled a 997 score across all five matches for a team-best 199.4 average. Brenneman and Hanaway also played in all five matches, averaging 186.8 and 179.6, respectively.
Â
Kutztown will return to Bowlero Deptford, Sunday, to conclude the tournament with best-of-7 Baker format bracket play.
