Kutztown starts strong, wins fourth in-a-row with victory at Mansfield

MANSFIELD, Pa. – Kutztown women's basketball opened the first quarter by outscoring Mansfield 20-9 and never looked back, riding the overall performance of Casey Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy), winning its fourth straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game 71-49 Wednesday night on the road.

Remolde finished with her second double-double this season, recording 14 points and 12 rebounds. The senior also added four blocks, four assists and three steals and did it all for the Maroon and Gold. It is the fifth consecutive games that she has scored double digits and eighth time in the last nine contests. Naia Pulliam (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) led the way offensively with a game-high 17 points. Annie Whalen (Ivyland, Pa./Archbishop Wood), like her classmate in Remolde, stuffed the stat sheet, tallying 14 points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks.

KU led by 10 at halftime, 34-24, and then by 14 (52-38) after three quarters of play. It put the game out of reach early on in the fourth quarter, elevating its lead to 20 (63-43), and outscored the Mounties (1-13, 0-10) 19-11 in the final frame.

It was the sixth straight victory for Kutztown over Mansfield.

Zara Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) very nearly had a triple-double as she finished with eight points, six rebounds and seven assists. Sydney Pierson (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) contributed six points. Skyler West (York Springs, Pa./Bermudian Springs) and Leila Hurley (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Jim Thorpe) both had three points and Olivia Smelas (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Jim Thorpe), Shannon Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) and Noelle Baxter (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) all added two points.

Kutztown remains on the road for its next game, when it takes on Shippensburg this Saturday, Jan. 21, at 1 p.m. The Raiders (13-3, 8-2) are currently in first place in the PSAC East Division, one game ahead of the Golden Bears.
