KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- The Kutztown University women's tennis team pulled out a close victory in its first match of 2022-23, securing a 4-3 win over Scranton in non-conference competition Friday afternoon at Keystone Courts.
The Golden Bears (1-0 overall) won two of the three doubles matches to opening up the day against the Royals (0-1) and take a 2-1 overall lead in the match.
Jess Marks (Allentown, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) and
Brianna Wendling (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) at the No. 2 spot in the lineup won their match 6-3 and the duo of
Sarah Lazarchak (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) and
Jessika Klo (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) were victorious 6-1 at No. 3 doubles.
The two teams split the six singles matches. Wendling had the highlight match at No. 4 singles, winning the opening set 6-3, but dropped the second 2-6 before coming back to win 6-3 in the final. Lazarchak and Klo each won their matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively, without much trouble. Lazarchak was victorious 6-0, 6-1 and Klo took her match 6-2, 6-3.
Kutztown is right back out on the court less than 24 hours later when it hosts Chestnut Hill for a match tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 10, at 11 a.m.
