KUTZTOWN, Pa.- The fifth-ranked Kutztown University field hockey team (2-0) finished the holiday weekend 2-0 following a 7-0 victory over Southern Connecticut State (0-2) Sunday afternoon at Andre Reed Stadium. Freshman Casey Lynn Dewald (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood Area) led the way for Kutztown, notching a hat trick in the win.
After a 10-0 win on Saturday, the Golden Bear offense showed out again, scoring five goals in the third quarter alone to pull away from the Owls and secure the win. KU also out shot SCSU 32-0 and had 28 penalty corners in the contest compared to the Owl's zero.
KU dominated the first half, but the squad struggled to find the back of the net as half-time approached. With 11 seconds before the break, Juliana Donato (Cedarville, N.J./Schalick) played a ball across goal that found Dewald, who slotted it home for the 1-0 lead.
After the first goal, the floodgates opened. Two goals from Dewald and goals by Donato, Erin Gonzalez (East Earl, Pa./Garden Spot), and Ruby van den Sigtenhorst (Dirkshorn, Netherlands/OSG Willem Blaeu) made it 6-0 in favor of the hosts in the third quarter. Rachel Dusman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) added one more in the fourth quarter to seal the 7-0 win for Kutztown.
The Golden Bears are now 2-0 on the campaign and have outscored their opponents 17-0 over the first two games of the season. KU's non-conference slate continues next weekend as Frostburg State makes the trip to Andre Reed Stadium. That game is on Saturday, Sept. 10, and will start at 6 p.m.
