KUTZTOWN, Pa.Â
– A national runner-up finish, a Super Region I championship, and an All-American and All-PSAC performer,
Andrew Dunn Jr. (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) capped his final year donning Maroon and Gold at Kutztown University being named the 2021-22 KU Male Athlete of the Year, announced Thursday.
Â
Dunn Jr., has been a regular in the KU athletic department's year end awards, hearing his name called for the third time in the last four years as the male athlete of the year. He is the third wrestler to bring home the award, joining Ziad Haddad (2014, 2015) and Joe Kemmerer (2007, 2009).
Â
Dunn Jr. won 61 consecutive matches across parts of three seasons prior to the championship bout this year and compiled a 69-3 overall record (.958), 22 pins, 15 major decisions and three technical falls. The Bethlehem native totaled 91 collegiate wins including his redshirt freshman season at Virginia Tech in 2017-18. He posted a 23-1 record this season, including a 12-0 dual record and 7-0 PSAC dual record. He scored 62 team points for the Golden Bears in duals and led Kutztown with eight pins on the year. He helped push KU to sixth in the final NWCA national rankings.
Â
The Bethlehem native won the heavyweight national championship in 2019 and was 20-0 in 2019-20 heading into nationals, before they were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Â
He holds three of the of the program's top eight season winning percentages (1.000 in 2019-20; .958 in 2021-22; and .929 in 2018-19) and ranks tied for ninth at KU in career victories.
Â
Dunn Jr. is in elite company among Kutztown wrestling greats as one of three three-time All-Americans (2019, 2020, 2022) along with Kohlby O'Donnell (1998, 2001, 2002) and Ziad Haddad (2013, 2014, 2015). He is also a three-time Super Region I champ and All-PSAC wrestler and also brought home PSAC Athlete of the Year honors twice.
Â
Kutztown University's annual athletic awards are selected through a vote of the department's administration, head coaches and support staff. Throughout the week, winners will be announced on KUBears.com and the Golden Bears' social media channels.
