Women's Rugby places fourth in pool play at ACRA Championships

STONINGTON, CT. -- Kutztown University women's rugby's undefeated spring came to an end Sunday as KU went 1-3 in pool play to go fourth in the pool at the ACRA Championships. In two of the losses, KU competed to the wire, but just wasn't able to pull out the victory.

Game 1 vs Vassar. KU 17- Vassar 27
KU started the game off with a try directly from receiving the kick off with Emily Duff (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) running in an unassisted try. The game was a back and forth try exchange between the teams. Ku led at half 17-12. In the second half Vassar was able to score two tries to pull ahead 22-17 right before the dead with just enough time to kick off. KU took the kickoff but Vassar was able to work a turn over and run the ball in for a try to finish the match.

Ku tries by Emily Duff (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn), megan Babinsky, and Maddy Forster (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) with one conversion by Alyssa Arena (Lititz, Pa./C Milton Wright)

Game 2 vs WPI. KU 22 -19
WPI and Ku played each other evenly in another back And forth match going into half time tied 12 all. In the second half KU season top try scorer Megan Babinsky (Barnesville, Pa./Mahanoy Area) would put in two tries for a hat trick in the game that would pull the bears into the lead which they were able to hold over WPI before a late penalty against WPI allowed KU to kick the ball into touch to end the game.

Game 3 vs Fairfield. KU 20 - Fairfield 26
Kutztown came out controlling the game and marching down field with the offense, scoring a crashing try through Daphne Posey (Williamstown, N.J./Paul VI). Right after, KU made their way back down the field to knock on the try line but a missed opportunity allowed Fairfield to poach the ball and run the length of the field to score, bringing the teams to 7 - 5 at half in Fairfield's favor. Both side opened up the try taps in the second half including KU Maddy Forster (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) scoring on a line against the grain and KU scoring a beautiful team try in the corner finished by Emily Duff (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn). Down 21-15 megan Babinsky scored in the corner to bring the score to 21-20 but were unable to convert for the lead. Thinking the game was over, the ref allowed play to restart with added injury time. KU kicked off, desperate to pressure Fairfield into a turnover. The desperation opened a whole in the Ku's defense and allowed Fairfield to run in a try to finish the game.
