KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- The Kutztown University men's tennis team cruised to its third straight victory, 9-0, over NCAA Division III Penn State Berks in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at the Keystone Courts.
Playing under DIII scoring rules, the Golden Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles.
Gonzalo Barcelo (San Pedro, Argentina/Nuestra Senora del Socorro) and
Neal Devkaran (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic) topped Anthony Chan and Jack Filip, 8-1, at No. 1, before
Sebastian Arizpe (Puebla, Mexico/Colegio Humboldt de Puebla) and
Justin Gincauskas (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park Secondary) shut out Shane Gleason and Jonathan Morello, 8-0, at No. 2.
Kutztown (5-5) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win from
Ethan Moyer (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) and
Kurt Abell (Sinking Spring, Pa./Conrad Weiser) against Cole Epting and Daniel Popovici at No. 3.
Singles was also controlled by the Maroon and Gold.
No. 1 Barcelo, No. 2 Devkaran, No. 3 Arizpe and No. 6 Abell were all 6-0, 6-0 winners over their respective Nittany Lion opponents. Moyer ceded just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 and Gincauskas two in a 6-2, 6-0 triumph at No. 4.
Wednesday's victory ensures Kutztown will have the opportunity to finish the season with a winning record if it can defeat Davis & Elkins at 2 p.m. Saturday in its finale at the Keystone Courts.
