MILLERSVILLE, Pa. -- Kutztown men's tennis was shut out, 7-0, by host Millersville in a PSAC match Saturday afternoon.
The Marauders, who reached the PSAC semifinals last spring, swept doubles and earned all six singles points in straight sets to move above .500 at 6-5 (2-2 PSAC, while KU slipped to 1-8 (1-3 PSAC) on the season.
Kutztown's top doubles tandem of
Gonzalo Barcelo (San Pedro, Argentina/Nuestra Senora del Socorro) and
Neal Devkaran (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic) were closest to taking a match off Millersville, but came up just short, 7-5, against Carlos Martinez-Lucas and Frank Yanni. The Marauders won second and third doubles by 6-0 scores, carrying plenty of confidence into singles.
Sebastian Arizpe (Puebla, Mexico/Colegio Humboldt de Puebla) won a match-high six games for the Maroon and Gold in his fourth flight 6-3, 6-3 loss to Jasper de Koning, while Barcelo took five off Martinez-Lucas at No. 1 in a 6-3, 6-2 defeat.
No. 2 Devkaran and No. 6
Kurt Abell (Sinking Spring, Pa./Conrad Weiser) joined Arizpe and Barcelo by winning three games in their opening sets.
Kutztown will open its spring season home slate next weekend when last year's PSAC champion (Edinboro) and runner-up (Mercyhurst) visit the Keystone Courts. The Golden Bears take on Mercyhurst Friday at 3 p.m. and Edinboro Saturday at noon.
