KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Nationally-ranked Mercyhurst spoiled the spring home opener for Kutztown University men's tennis, Friday, blanking the Golden Bears by a 7-0 count in a PSAC match.
The visiting Lakers got off to a quick start by sweeping doubles and went on to win all six singles matches in straight sets.
Justin Gincauskas (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park Secondary) and
Sebastian Arizpe (Puebla, Mexico/Colegio Humboldt de Puebla) captured three games in their 6-3 loss to Ben Davis and Noha De Sousa Pereira at second doubles, while KU's (2-4, 0-3 PSAC) top pair of
Gonzalo Barcelo (San Pedro, Argentina/Nuestra Senora del Socorro) and
Neal Devkaran (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic) fought to the end in a 6-2 defeat against David Akinpetide and Milan Jankovic at first doubles. Akinpetide and Jankovic are ranked second in the ITA Atlantic Region and 47th in the ITA national rankings.
Arizpe took four games off Jankovic in a 6-2, 6-2 loss at third singles, where Jankovic was ranked 19th regionally, while Barcelo fell to regionally-ranked No. 13 Akinpetide 6-2, 6-0 at first singles.
Gincauskas, a sophomore from Mississauga, Ontario, totaled four game victories in a 6-1, 6-3 setback to De Sousa Pereira at No. 4 singles.
Mercyhurst (8-8, 4-0 PSAC) is the defending conference runner-up.
The Golden Bears will host another western power Saturday as defending PSAC champion Edinboro visits the Keystone Courts. Due to the forecast of overnight rain, Saturday's match has been bumped back two hours from a noon start to 2 p.m.
