Zach Moretski totals 100th career hit, but Golden Bears drop series finale to Mansfield

CORNING, N.Y. -- Zach Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) had a season-high three hits, the last of which marked the 100th of his career, but Kutztown was unable to protect an early three-run lead as Mansfield stormed back for an 11-3 PSAC East victory Monday afternoon at Corning Community College.

The Golden Bear offense could only muster up three runs on six hits from four different players. Moretski went 3-for-4 with a double to lead the way for the visitors.

The game was scoreless after two innings, but Kutztown struck first in the top of the third. Mike Piscotty (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Hanover Area) drew a walk to lead off the inning, advancing to second on a passed ball. Piscotty came in to score on a single to right off the bat of Mike Kelly (Schwenksville, Pa./Pope John Paul II). After stealing second, Kelly would be driven in on a double to right center by Ethan Martini (Trevose, Pa./Father Judge). After advancing to third on a ground out, Martini made his way home on a wild pitch giving the Golden Bears a 3-0 lead.

The Mountaineers scored one run in the bottom of the fourth on a home run down the left field line by Samuel Freedman. During the fifth and sixth innings, Mansfield took control of the game, scoring seven runs on five hits heading into the seventh with an 8-3 lead. Its lead continued to grow in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring two more runs on a double down the right field line by Josh Farina.

The Golden Bears were unable to overcome the deficit, losing 11-3 as the Mountaineers take home the series two games to one.

Gavin Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) took the loss for Kutztown, while Luke Payne picked up the win in relief for the Mountaineers.

The Golden Bears head to Wilmington (Del.) for a midweek matchup against the Wildcats tomorrow at 3 p.m.
