WILMINGTON, Del. – Kutztown University baseball was toppled on the road by the Wilmington Wildcats 13-4 in a non-conference match up Tuesday afternoon. Wilmington doubled Kutztown's hit total with 14 during the competition. The Maroon and Gold threw six different pitchers, only two of which threw two innings.
The Wildcats took a two-run led in the first inning on two hits in the inning, and it would only grow in the second bringing one more run across the plate.
The Golden Bears answered in the top of the third inning, scoring four runs on four hits in the inning. The first five batters in the inning reached base safely before the Wildcats recorded an out. Kutztown's inning was capped off by an RBI single through the right side by
Austin Gromlich (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg) to give the Golden Bears a 4-3 lead.
Wilmington took a commanding lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring eight runs in the inning, highlighted by an RBI double by Matt Warrington to tie the game at four. The Wildcats sent 13 batters to the plate compiling seven hits throughout the inning.
In the seventh, Quinton Ivory launched a two run home run to left extending Wilmington's lead to nine runs.
Kutztown's offense finished with seven hits in the contest, from five different batters.
Mike Kelly (Schwenksville, Pa./Pope John Paul II) and
Zach Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) led the Golden Bears with two hits each, Kelly adding two RBIs and a run scored.
Kody Cracknell (Jamison, Pa./Archbishop Wood) takes the loss for Kutztown, falling to 0-1 on the season. Scott Borgmann earned his second win on the season, improving to 2-1 for his scoreless three innings in relief.
Kutztown will be back in action on Friday, April 15th at North Campus Field, scheduled to take on Shippensburg at 2:00 p.m.
