Baseball cranks four homers, but drops set at Concord

ATHENS, W.Va. -- Gavin Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.), Mitchell Peers (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) and Antonio Rossillo (Warrington, Pa./Archbishop Wood) all homered for the Kutztown University baseball team, Saturday, but it wasn't enough to overcome 33 combined hits by host Concord. The Golden Bears were swept in a non-conference doubleheader, dropping game one 6-5 and the nightcap 21-2.

GAME 1
Concord 6, Kutztown 5

Concord's first two batters struck out, but the Mountain Lions wouldn't go quietly, using a walk and three straight hits to grab a 3-0 lead after one. Kyle Keenan followed Chris Satcher's RBI single with a double, driving a ball to right center that scored both baserunners. Keenan was thrown out trying to stretch the double into a triple.

Kutztown responded in the top of the second, plating four runs on four hits to go in front.

Rossillo led off with a solo shot to left field for his second home run of the season. The Bears then found themselves with runners on the corners after singles by Ethan Martini (Trevose, Pa./Father Judge) and Jason Wolff (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough). Both came across on a Joey Pettinelli (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) triple to left field. Pettinelli scored the final run of the inning for the visitors on a Mike Kelly (Schwenksville, Pa./Pope John Paul II) ground out.

Peers increased KU's lead to 5-3 by replicating Rossillo with a solo homer to left to lead off the third.

The Mountain Lions pushed across another two-out run in the bottom of the frame when Satcher singled into left.

Concord kept the Golden Bears off the board the rest of the way and went back in front on a pair of RBI doubles in the fifth. Pinch-hitter Micheal Dupont went to the right center field gap to score Josh Adkins with the tying run and Keenan hit his second double of the afternoon with two gone to bring in pinch-runner Brandon Bayne with the go-ahead marker.

Zach Male (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) recorded another solid strikeout total with six in five innings, but the Mountain Lions totaled six runs (five earned) on 10 hits against the Kutztown starter as he fell to 0-4 on the year. Andrew Neff went the distance for Concord, allowing five runs on eight hits and striking out 10 in a winning effort.

GAME 2
Concord 21, Kutztown 2

While the opener was a tough result for the Bears to swallow after plenty of back-and-forth play, game two was one to quickly erase from the memory bank.

Gavin Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) led off the game with a blast to center field for his first home run of the season and made it two round-trippers in as many at-bats in the third, but those were the lone highlights for Kutztown.

Concord's offense erupted for 11 runs in the first inning against reigning NCBWA National and Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Week Dominic Proietto (Norristown, Pa./Norristown), sending 15 batters to the plate in the inning and amassing 11 hits. Chris Satcher hit a three-run homer to right center and had four RBIs in the inning, while Zack Saryeldin provided a two-run single.

The Mountain Lions (5-3-1) continued to hit the ball hard, racking up 22 hits, nine extra-base hits and runs in each of the first five innings.

Josh Adkins hit a two-run double and Satcher knocked in another run as part of a six-run fourth for Concord. Juan Fortique capped the scoring with a pinch-hit two-run homer in the fifth.

Eddie Blake struck out eight and the two Moretski homers wound up being the only damage against him over six innings.

Kutztown will look to salvage the weekend in game three of the series scheduled for Sunday at noon.
