Golden Bears fall in series finale at Concord

ATHENS, W.Va. -- Kutztown was unable to absolve the heat from Concord's bats, Sunday, as the Mountain Lions put up 17 runs on 16 hits to sweep the three-game non-conference series, 17-7, at Anderson Field.

Kutztown took an early lead, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning on three hits. Jimmy Kerley (Indian Trail, N.C./Sun Valley) gave the Maroon and Gold (4-9) an early boost, hitting a solo shot over the left field wall for his first collegiate home run. With the bases loaded and two outs, Zach Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) came through with a clutch single up the middle to drive home two more, staking KU to a 3-0 advantage.

Concord drew back within one in the bottom of the first, before the Golden Bears struck again in the top of the third.

Antonio Rosillo doubled to left center to get the offense rolling and Colt Narciso (Norristown, Pa./Pope John Paul II) followed with his first extra base hit of the season, a triple to left, scoring the KU catcher. Narciso would trot home on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Heere (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) as Kutztown went up 5-2.

The Mountain Lions (6-3-1) kept the game within reach, again answering Kutztown's runs with two of their own. Michael Dupont collected his second and third RBIs of the game with a bases loaded single to center.

Kutztown stretched its lead once more, to 6-4, on Kerley's double in the top of the fourth that brought in Mike Kelly (Schwenksville, Pa./Pope John Paul II).

Concord's offense exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth, however, putting the hosts in front for the first time. The Mountain Lions scored four more runs in the fifth and Dupont capped off a hard-hitting weekend with a two-run homer in the seventh.

Kerley provided the only remaining offense for Kutztown in the sixth with an RBI ground out that plated Piscotty. It marked the third RBI of the game for the freshman infielder from Indian Trail, N.C.

Rylee Nicholas was the only arm on both sides to last more than one inning without running into extensive trouble. He came on in relief of starter Jacob Nester (6 ER on 7 hits) and recorded the final 16 outs with just one run allowed on one hit for his second win of the season.

Gavin Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) started and suffered the loss for the Bears, dropping his record to 2-2.

Kutztown will again be on the road Wednesday for a non-conference game at Lincoln, before Millersville visits North Campus Field Friday afternoon for the Bears' home and PSAC East opener.
