Softball takes care of Jefferson for two wins before beginning PSAC play

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown University softball made quick work of Jefferson University with two, five-inning victories in non-conference action on a cold Tuesday afternoon from North Campus Field. KU won 15-2 in the opener and came out on top 8-0 in the second game.

The Golden Bears (16-8 overall) outhit the Rams (3-9) 22-9 overall in the two games. The 15 runs in game one is the most by KU in a single game since March 6, 2016, when it defeated Saint Rose 15-1.

Freshman Brianna Stocklin (Deptford, N.J./Deptford Township) led the way offensively for Kutztown, finishing with five hits in six at-bats and added four runs and four RBIs. She ranks in the top-five in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in runs scored with 22. Kate Ostaszewski (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) went 3-for-7 and had five RBIs, all in game one, a career-high for the senior. Jenna Lipowski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area) was 3-for-5 with one run and four RBIs. Hannah Auvil (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point), Brianna Hughes (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland), Zoe Texidor (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) and Sarah Harvey (Swanton, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) all had two hits on the day.

Inside the circle, Bridget Bailey (Norwood, Pa./Interboro) got the start in the opener and went the full five innings, earning her eighth victory of the season, which leads the PSAC. She struck out nine and now ranks fourth in program history with 346 career strikeouts. Harvey started the nightcap and was credited with the win, going four innings, striking out three. Amber Brugger (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy) came on in the fifth and helped complete the shutout.

Kutztown begins play in the PSAC East Division with a doubleheader at home against East Stroudsburg on Saturday, April 2, beginning at noon.

GAME ONE
Kutztown 15, Jefferson 2

Following a doubleheader against Georgian Court last Friday, when the Kutztown bats combined for just 11 hits and four runs, KU broke out in a big way.

Stocklin was the catalyst behind the Maroon and Gold's first run. The freshman led off with a walk and then stole second and third, later coming home on a one-out sacrifice fly by Auvil.

Kutztown broke the game open in the bottom of the second, batting around in the lineup for the first of two consecutive innings. Two Jefferson errors put runners on the corners with one out. Texidor then beat out an infield single that brought home Hannah Reimel (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent). After a single by Stocklin to load the bases, Ostaszewski cleared them with a double over the center fielder's head. Auvil capped the six-run inning with a two-run home run to left field in the next at-bat.

The Golden Bears one-upped themselves the following inning, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs total in the frame, all coming with two outs. Ostaszewski had a two-run single. Two batters later, Lipowski ripped a grand slam over the left center field fence. Hughes followed that up with a solo drive and KU found itself ahead 14-0.

Stocklin singled home Texidor in the bottom of the fourth for the final run of the game for Kutztown.

GAME TWO
Kutztown 8, Jefferson 0

Looking for its first two-game sweep over an opponent since a March 14th sweep at Palm Beach Atlantic, Kutztown once again had its bats show up.

After a scoreless first inning, Harvey helped herself out while at the plate, doubling down the left field line to score Hughes for the game's opening run. Jenna Martinez (Oracle, Ariz./Canyon del Oro) and Stocklin then had back-to-back, two-out doubles to extend the lead to 3-0 after two.

Leading off the third, Auvil recorded her second long ball of the day and fifth of the season. Lipowski then followed with a double and came around to score two batters later on a run-scoring single the opposite way by Reimel.

In the fourth, Stocklin ripped her second double to bring home Sarah Harvat (Bangor, Pa./Bangor), who led off the inning with a single, and Martinez. Auvil capped the scoring for the game with an RBI groundout.

Harvey and Brugger combined for a three-hitter, walking one and did not allow a runner past second base.
