KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Staring at a two-game sweep on its home field, the Kutztown University softball team broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning of the second game and held on to defeat Georgian Court 3-2 after falling 2-1 in the opener Friday afternoon in the home opener at North Campus Field.
Jenna Martinez (Oracle, Ariz./Canyon del Oro) ripped an RBI double to the right center field fence that brought around
Kristin Geesey (Bainbridge, Pa./Elizabethtown), who also doubled to leadoff the fifth. Geesey gave KU its first lead of the day, 2-1. Two batters later,
Kate Ostaszewski (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) sent Martinez home on an RBI groundout, an insurance run that proved to be valuable for the Golden Bears (14-8 overall) in taking game two.
Amber Brugger (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy) earned her fifth victory this season, going the distance and allowing just the two earned runs while striking out six and giving up six hits.
It was mainly a pitching-dominated day as the two offenses combined for 21 hits in the two games with KU outhitting Georgian Court 11-10 overall.
Brianna Stocklin (Deptford, N.J./Deptford Township) led the Maroon and Gold with three hits and Martinez had two, both coming in the night cap.
Hannah Reimel (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) had a fifth-inning home run in game one that cut KU's deficit in half at 2-1, and
Hannah Auvil (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) recorded an RBI in game two that tied the score at 1-1 in the third.
Jenna Lipowski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area),
Brianna Hughes (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) and
Alyssa Donato (Cedarville, N.J./Cumberland Regional) also contributed one hit each, all coming in the game two victory.
