KUTZTOWN,Pa. - Eight different pitchers over nine innings get the job done for Kutztown University baseball as it bested Lincoln University 6-1 in a Tuesday, non-conference matchup, limiting the Lions to only three hits scattered throughout the game.
The Golden Bears (7-13 overall) jumped ahead of Lincoln in the bottom of the second as Zach Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) led off the inning with his first of two doubles in the game, and then moved up to third on a fly out to center field by Colin Kelly (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge). Colt Narciso (Norristown, Pa./Pope John Paul II) eventually brought Moretski home on a line-drive single to third base.
The Lions tied the game up at one in the top of the fourth inning. Leading off the inning with a double to left field, Damaal Sands came around to score Lincoln's lone run on two fly outs to the outfield.
Moretski's second double led to the Golden Bears retaking the lead in the bottom-half of the inning, eventually to be driven by Colin Kelly (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) taking a 2-1 lead. The Maroon and Gold continued to distance themselves, scoring three runs over the next two innings.
The final run came in the bottom of the eighth inning, Dominic Proietto (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) led off the inning, reaching base safely after being hit by a pitch. He then advanced to second on a wild pitch and swiped third base before being driven in by Mike Piscotty's (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Hanover Area) sacrifice fly to center field.
Kutztown's offense finished the game with six hits, Brian Finn (Warrington, Pa./Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) and Austin Gromlich (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg) adding to the hit total. Finn went 2-for-2 with two singles after entering the game in the top of the fifth inning.
AJ Torres (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood) gets credited with the win in his first appearance for the Maroon and Gold, now 1-0 on the season. Luis Reinoso took the loss for Lincoln, and fell to 0-6 on the season.
Kutztown is back in action on Friday, March 25th, as it heads to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division opponent Bloomsburg. First pitch is set for 2:00pm.
