BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Kutztown's defense struggled to keep the Bloomsburg offense off the scoreboard, allowing at least one run in the first six innings. The Huskies offense exploded for 18 runs on 15 hits in the contest in winning Friday's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Divisional game 18-2 at Bloomsburg.
Bloomsburg lived by the long ball, launching eight home runs, three coming off the bat of Ben Newbert who had a career-day at the plate. Newbert finished the day 4-for-6 with seven RBIs and came in to score four times as well.
The Golden Bear's offense was limited to just five hits, from four separate players, highlighted by Ethan Martini's (Trevose, Pa./Father Judge) 2-for-4 day, hitting a solo shot to center in the top of the fourth.
The only other run for the Maroon and Gold came in the top of the eight. Colin Kelly (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) led off the inning with a walk before advancing to second on a wild pitch. He would come in to score on a double to left center by Brennan Rozich (Oxford, Pa./Oxford).
Mike Kelly (Schwenksville, Pa./Pope John Paul II) and Gavin Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) were the other two Golden Bears to record a hit in the game, both singles. Moretski's came in the top of the first inning on a ground ball up the middle, Kelly's in the top of the fifth on a line drive to right field.
Kutztown starter Zach Male (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) couldn't make it out of the third inning, giving up 13 runs in just 2.2 innings, taking the loss for the Golden Bears. Jared Marshman gets credited for the win for the Huskies, he improves to 5-1 on the season.
The Golden Bears return home tomorrow, Saturday, March 25, in a double header against the Huskies to finish out the series. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
