NEW CASTLE, Del. -- Madison Lund (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) was at her best Saturday, rolling three 200+ games and finishing third in the individual standings with a 213.6 average as the Kutztown University women's bowling team opened play at the Northeast Roundup.
It was a tough day in the win-loss column for the Golden Bears, who went just 1-4 against some of the region's top teams despite some solid team scores.
Lund, a senior from Reading, paced Kutztown in four of its five matches. She came out hot against host Wilmington (Del.) with a 236, but the Wildcats took a 989-880 victory over the Bears.
Lund didn't let the result detract her focus, following up her opening game with a 246 as the Maroon and Gold defeated Mercyhurst 996-875.
Rachel Wagner (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Depew) joined her teammate in the 200s (200), while
Chloe Sromovski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) missed making it a trio of 200 games by one pin.
In a 1,017-825 loss against Saint Francis (Pa.), Lund led the way with a 189, ahead of Wagner (171) and
Megan Hanaway (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) (166).
Ironically, KU's (41-34) last two matches ended with exactly identical scores, with both 13th-ranked Fairleigh Dickinson and Wagner getting the best of the Bears by 1,023-952 scores. The defeats were tough luck outcomes for Kutztown, which bowled some impressive games.
Against the nationally-ranked Knights, Lund put forth a 218, with
Jordan Dean (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) close behind at 210 in her first match of the day and Wagner at 202.
Eleni Feggulis (South River, N.J./South River) rolled a 182.
Feggulis and Hanaway had their best games of the day with a 214 and 205, respectively, in Kutztown's loss to Wagner to wrap up play.
The Golden Bears will return to Bowlerama Sunday for four Baker style matches to conclude the tournament.
