KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- For
Andrew Dunn Jr. (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic),
Brian Kennerly (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby),
Matthew Weinberg (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and
Collin Wickramaratna (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee), this weekend's NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships at Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis is the opportunity of a lifetime.
For sixth-ranked Kutzown University, it's a chance to make program history.
Each Golden Bear has traveled a vastly different road to arrive at this point, but all have the same goals: win a national championship and add their name to a storied list of KU All-Americans.
Dunn Jr. is the 2019 NCAA DII national champion at heavyweight and unsurprisingly drew the No. 1 seed in the weight class after spending the entire season atop the NWCA national rankings.
The Bethlehem native very well could have been in position to make a run at a third national championship --unprecedented in Kutztown history-- had the 2020 championships not been canceled. A three-time Super Region 1 champion and two-time All-American after transferring to KU from Division I Virginia Tech, Dunn Jr. isn't concerned with "what ifs," though. His focus is squarely on ending his career on the top stage of the podium Saturday night.
In 68 matches with the Maroon and Gold dating since 2018-19, Dunn Jr. has posted a 66-2 record (.971) and is unbeaten against non-Division I opponents. He's currently riding a 58-match winning streak dating back to Jan. 5, 2019.
Dunn Jr., who enters the national tournament unbeaten at 20-0, draws UIndy's Cale Gray in the first round. The top half of the heavyweight bracket also includes No. 4 seed Kameron Teacher of St. Cloud State, who Dunn Jr. defeated in the 2019 national semifinals when Teacher wrestled for Notre Dame College and No. 8 seed Francesco Borsellino of West Liberty. No. 5 seed Ian Kuehl of McKendree could also be there if he advances past a pigtail match.
Don't expect the stage to be too big for Wickramaratna, either. The senior from Marlton, N.J., has been waiting two years for this chance.
Wickramaratna qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships as a freshman at Ursinus College back in 2018 before transferring to Kutztown prior to his sophomore season. All he did in his first season with the Golden Bears was go 24-2, win the Super Region 1 title at 133 pounds and punch his ticket to another national tournament.
Like Dunn, Wickramaratna fell victim to the 2020 championships being axed as a result of the pandemic. He was still recognized for a stellar season with NWCA All-America honors.
This season has had minor bumps along the way, but Wickramaratna owns a 22-4 record and rebounded from a regular season loss to Mercyhurst's Eric Bartos to defeat him for the Super Region 1 championship, 8-5, two weekends ago.
Wickramaratna is seeded sixth at 133, where he'll face Majid Corbett (7-0) of Limestone in the first round.
A pair of first-year Golden Bears are making their debuts at nationals to round out Kutztown's qualifiers.
Weinberg, a former Penn State club wrestler, is 9-1 since latching on with KU at the semester break. He solidified the Bears' lineup and went on to claim the Super Region 1 championship at 184 lbs. with a pin and two decisions.
The Philadelphian is a big reason Kutztown vaulted all the way to sixth in the final NWCA national rankings. He entered the individual rankings at No. 10 in the weight class and will face sixth-ranked and No. 6 seed Marty Verhaeghe of Fort Hays State in the opening round. Verhaeghe's 38 wins (38-9) on the season are second-most in the bracket behind Glenville State's Cole Houser (39).
Kennerly wrestled at Division I Virginia during the 2017-18 season, but hasn't been back on the mat competitively again until this year. A former PIAA state champion at Upper Darby High School, Kennerly's leadership as a graduate student and experience at the top level have been invaluable to the Kutztown program.
Kennerly leads the Golden Bears with 24 wins this season (24-3), but didn't get his proper due until the last NWCA rankings when he went from unranked to No. 4 in the country after winning the 197-pound Super Region 1 championship.
Kennerly is seeded fourth at nationals, where he'll take on Colorado Mesa's Donald Negus (23-4) in the first round.
As a program, Kutztown has never claimed four All-Americans in the same season. Austin Petril,
T.C. Warner and Ryan Appleby were the first to give the Golden Bears three All-Americans in the same tournament back in 2017. Kutztown did it again with Warner, Dunn Jr. and Jeff Reimel in 2019, on its way to a program-best 10th-place team finish.
Head coach
Robert Fisher, now in his 21st season, has mentored 25 of the program's 32 all-time All-Americans and all five of its national champions. Dunn Jr. is aiming to join Joe Kemmerer (2007, 2009) and Ziad Haddad (2014, 2015) as multi-time national champions from KU. He can also become the program's third three-time All-American along with Kohlby O'Donnell (1998, 2001, 2002) and Haddad (2013, 2014, 2015).
Wrestling begins Friday at noon Eastern (11 a.m. locally) with preliminary and first round matches. The evening session begins at 6 p.m. Eastern (5 p.m. locally).
Saturday features championship semifinals, consolation matches and third-, fifth- and seventh-place matches starting at 11 a.m. Eastern (10 a.m. locally). Championship finals are slated to begin at 8 p.m. Eastern (7 p.m. locally) Saturday night.
