NEW CASTLE, Del. -- No. 25 Kutztown women's bowling put up three 900+ matches and registered a 3-2 record in Baker play to slot in sixth after a very tightly-contested opening day at the Wildcat Invitational, Friday.
The Golden Bears rallied from a 31-pin deficit following game two against Bloomfield to win the final three in a 949-929 victory to begin the day.
Lindsey Gotwalt (Hanover, Md./Meade),
Megan Hanaway (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township),
Eleni Feggulis (South River, N.J./South River),
Rachel Wagner (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Depew) and
Chloe Sromovski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) were in the lineup, helping KU to its highest score of the day with a 236 in a game four win.
Chestnut Hill turned around and toppled the Maroon and Gold (36-26) in come-from-behind fashion, 892-846. Kutztown built a 42-pin advantage through game three, but the Griffins found an impressive 267 in game four to wipe out the Bears' lead and then some, even with KU rolling a solid 200.
KU got back in the win column against New Jersey City University, 803-759, but its results continued to flip-flop with a 956-928 setback to Mercyhurst in its fourth match of the day. It was a tough loss for the Bears, who produced an opening 232 against the Lakers, only to see Mercyhurst answer with a 226 in game two and a 223 in game three.
The Bears closed with a strong 925-890 win over Felician, avenging a loss to the Golden Falcons in the ninth-place match at last weekend's James Brown Invitational. With the same lineup intact all day, Kutztown rolled a 203 in game two and a 233 in the finale.
Caldwell jumped to the top of the leaderboard with 4,671 pins and a 186.84 average, but there are just 235 pins separating the leaders from seventh-place Bloomfield (4,436).
Kutztown's 4,451 pins and 178.04 average rank sixth, 38 pins back of host Wilmington (Del.) for a spot in the top five.
The Bears will take on Daemen, Wilmington, Caldwell, Bloomfield and Molloy in Saturday's matches at Bolwerama.
