TOWSON, Md. -- The 25th-ranked Kutztown University women's bowling team took part in bracket play for the first time this season to close out the James Brown Invitational Sunday. The Golden Bears started off hot with a sweep of Felician, but fell to Coppin State and in a rematch with Felician to finish 10th in the tournament at AMF Towson Lanes.
Playing best-of-seven matches, KU's lineup of
Lindsey Gotwalt (Hanover, Md./Meade),
Megan Hanaway (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township),
Jordan Dean (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor),
Eleni Feggulis (South River, N.J./South River) and
Chloe Sromovski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) asserted themselves with a 197-137 victory over Felician in game one. That dominance continued in the subsequent games, as the Bears put up three straight 200+ games (221-216-225) to complete the 4-0 sweep.
Kutztown, which entered bracket play seeded ninth after Baker matches Friday and traditional matches Saturday, could have finished as high as seventh with three wins Sunday, but Coppin State turned around to sweep the Maroon and Gold (33-24), avenging a loss Friday. The first three games were tightly-contested, all decided by 20 pins or less.
The Bears were unable to work up the same magic a second time against Felician, dropping the ninth-place match, 4-1. Using the same lineup the entire day, Kutztown fell behind 2-0, before winning game three, 215-181. Felician answered with a 215-190 win in game four and ended the series with a 167-142 victory in game five.
Kutztown will be back in action next Friday-Sunday at the Wildcat DII/III Invitational hosted by Wilmington University at Bowlerama in New Castle, Del.
