HARTFORD, Conn. – In what can be viewed as an experience of a lifetime, the Kutztown women's basketball program took to the court against the 11-time NCAA Division I national champions, University of Connecticut, at the XL Center Sunday afternoon. KU was defeated 115-42.
The Huskies need no introduction, as they are one of the most historic programs in the history of college athletics. Head coach Geno Auriemma, an alum of fellow PSAC school West Chester, has led the Huskies to 11 national championships, 14 consecutive Final Fours, and over 50 regular season and conference tournament championships. UConn finished the 2021-22 season 30-6, with a 16-1 mark in conference play. They captured the Big East championship but ultimately fell to South Carolina in the National Championship game.
The Golden Bears wrapped up their preseason tour of DI opponents, after taking on Fordham in the Bronx last Thursday, Nov. 3.
Naia Pulliam (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) led the Maroon and Gold offense with eight points.
Annie Whalen (Ivyland, Pa./Archbishop Wood) recorded seven points, while both
Sydney Pierson (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) and
Abbey Hearn (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) tallied six points.
Casey Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) chipped in five points for KU.
Connecticut took control of the game early on after KU initially held a 7-6 lead in the opening quarter. The Huskies outscored Kutztown 25-11 the rest of the quarter and then 23-6 in the second stanza to take a 54-24 advantage into halftime.
Kutztown now sets its sights on the season opener this Friday, Nov. 11, at 4 p.m., against Bowie State. KU will play in a two-day, CIAA/PSAC Challenge, held at Shippensburg. That Saturday, the Golden Bears will take on Fayetteville State, also at 4 p.m.
