SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.-- The Kutztown University women's basketball team (0-1) dropped a back-and-forth affair in overtime to Bowie State (1-0) 63-60 at the first game of the CIAA/PSAC Challenge at Shippensburg Friday afternoon.
Abbey Hearn (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) led the Golden Bears on the court, putting up 21 points, seven rebounds, and two assists. Naia Pulliam (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) scored 11 points and had a team-high three assists, while Casey Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) scored nine points and led the team with eight rebounds.
KU shot 42% from the floor, 33% from three-point range, and 83% from the free-throw line. The Golden Bears struggled in the turnover category, turning the ball over 24 times to Bowie State's 12, while the Bulldogs grabbed 21 offensive rebounds to the Golden Bears' 11.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a significant 13-4 lead after one quarter, but KU clawed back and led 45-43 by the end of the third quarter. Bowie State started to pull away as the fourth went on, taking a 58-53 lead with two minutes left in the game. A three-pointer by Abbey Hearn (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen), followed by a jumper by Naia Pulliam (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) with 49 seconds left tied the game at 58 and sent the game to overtime.
In the extra frame, KU struggled to find their scoring touching, shooting 1-for-5 from the floor, while Bowie State scored five points and secured the victory 63-60.
The Golden Bears wrap up the CIAA/PSAC Challenge tomorrow against Fayetteville State at Shippensburg. The game tips off at 4 p.m.
