LAKEWOOD, N.J. – Imani Gillette got off a layup inside the pain with just 0.6 seconds remaining as Georgian Court held on for a 59-57 win over Kutztown Wednesday night in a non-conference game at the GCU Wellness Center.
Â
The Golden Bears (1-2 overall) erased multiple second half deficits, including being down by six points (48-42) with 8:00 left in the fourth quarter. They also found themselves trailing 57-54 with 0:51 to go, but a free throw by
Annie Whalen (Ivyland, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and a layup off a steal by
Naia Pulliam (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) tied the score at 57-57 with five seconds to play. The Lions (1-2) raced down the court following an inbounds under their basket and an initial shot was blocked by
Abbey Hearn (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen), which went out of bounds.
Â
Following a timeout, Savawn Hughes inbounded the ball to Gillette, who quickly threw up a one-handed shot that banked off the glass and into the basket to send Georgian Court to a win in its home opener.
Â
Pulliam finished with a team-high 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor, and added six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Abbey Hearn (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) was one rebound shy of her first double-double this season, scoring 12 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Whalen was the third Golden Bear in double-figures in the score column, tallying 10 points, adding three rebounds and two assists.
Casey Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) recorded eight points, seven rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
Sydney Pierson (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) contributed five points and seven rebounds and
Olivia Smelas (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Jim Thorpe) had four points, five rebounds and two blocks.
Noelle Baxter (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) rounded out the scoring for Kutztown with three points, connecting on her lone three-point attempt.
Â
KU took a 30-28 lead into halftime after five points in 0:32 after trailing 28-25 with less than a minute left in the half. Whalen connected from distance and Pulliam added a layup to send the Maroon and Gold into the locker room on top.
Â
Kutztown concludes its season-long four-game stretch away from Keystone Arena when it takes on Jefferson on Saturday, Nov. 19, at 2 p.m., from the Gallagher Center.
