KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Senior
Breann Craley (York, Pa./Central York) scored her fourth goal of the season late in the third quarter to break a scoreless deadlock and
Katie Dotterweich (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) helped preserve the shutout as third-ranked Kutztown field hockey took down top-ranked East Stroudsburg 1-0 Tuesday night at Andre Reed Stadium in its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference regular season home finale.
Â
The victory is the Golden Bears' (15-2 overall, 7-1 PSAC) ninth in-a-row, the most since the 2007 team won 10 straight. The win also gives KU sole possession of first place in the PSAC with one game remaining in the regular season. The Maroon and Gold is on the fast track to top seed in the PSAC Tournament, meaning it would have a bye to the semifinal round and host the final four on the weekend of Nov. 18-20.
Â
Craley received the ball after an initial shot on cage by
Sarah Gatehouse (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) was saved by Warriors (13-2, 5-2) goalie Amy Supey. Craley took one touch and fired home what proved to be the game-winner with 4:38 left in the third quarter.
Â
The first half was fast paced but did not have a lot of action on either team's offensive end. The teams combined for just two shots and three penalty corners in the opening 30:00 of play.
Â
Dotterweich, along with the KU defense of Gatehouse,
Danielle Panati (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) and
Alyssa Eager (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) did their best to keep ESU out of the cage and preserve the ninth shutout on the year, second-most in a single season in program history. Dotterweich finished with one save, none bigger than a sprawling effort to make a save on a shot by Jady van Gils with 3:22 to go. East Stroudsburg had a 6-3 edge in shots, but that was the lone shot on goal, compared to three for KU. Dotterweich now has six shutouts this season, tied for most in the conference.
Â
Kutztown concludes its regular season portion of its schedule on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 11 a.m., at Slippery Rock.
