NEW CASTLE, Del. -- Kutztown University women's bowling knocked off 12th-ranked Delaware State for its lone win on the final day of the Bud Whitman Memorial, Sunday, at Bowlerama.
It was a tough go for the Golden Bears in Baker play, as they dropped 3-of-4 matches, before falling to Coppin State for a second time, 4-2, in a best-of-seven match for fifth place.
Kutztown opened the day facing off against Coppin State, but fell behind early before a late rally came up 43 pins short in an 854-811 setback.
The lineup of
Alyssa Blood (Birdsboro, Pa./Daniel Boone),
Meghan Ripley (Bel Air, Md./Fallston),
Megan Hanaway (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township),
Shelby Wunch (Easton, Md./Easton) and
Chloe Sromovski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) lifted KU (5-7) to its 17th win all-time against Delaware State. The Bears were strong throughout, posting 200+ games in the second (212) and fourth (214) along with a 190 in the third and a 180 in the first. The Hornets topped 200 in the opening game, but couldn't keep pace the rest of the way in a 963-882 KU victory.
Kutztown suffered defeats at the hands of Wilmington (1010-891) and Caldwell (853-821) to wrap seeding play. The Maroon and Gold bowled their best game of the day in the finale against host Wilmington with a 236.
In the rematch with Coppin State for fifth place, KU rallied from an opening game loss to win the next two. The Eagles, who rolled a 258 in the first game, tied the series with a 206 in game four. Games five and six were tightly contested, but both went Coppin State's way (167-152 and 192-180), lifting the Eagles to fifth and relegating the Bears to sixth.
Kutztown will return to competition in two weeks when they host the Golden Bear Invitational at Berks Lanes in Sinking Spring, Pa., Oct. 22-23.
