SINKING SPRING, Pa. -- Hosting its first tournament since the 2019-20 season, Kutztown University women's bowling went 3-2, including a victory over Molloy in the fifth-place match, to conclude action in the Golden Bear Invite Sunday at Berks Lanes.
KU came out strong, as
Rachel Wagner (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Depew),
Ally Sipe (York, Pa./Central York),
Madison Brenneman (York, Pa./Central York),
Shelby Wunch (Easton, Md./Easton) and
Chloe Sromovski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) took the first four games from Felician, before ultimately downing the Golden Eagles 880-810.
Eleni Feggulis (South River, N.J./South River) joined the lineup against rival Wilmington (Del.). Despite two hard-fought wins in games three (190-187) and five (161-148), the Bears (11-11) couldn't overcome an early deficit in a 931-841 setback.
Angela Reynold's team played its best match in an extremely competitive battle with Caldwell. Wagner, Feggulis, Wunch and Sromovski were joined by
Megan Hanaway (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township). That lineup produced a match-high 226 right out of the game to withstand a 201 from Caldwell. KU also topped 200 in games three (222) and five (201), winning 4-of-5 games to down the Cougars, 1001-912.
The final seeding match of the weekend for Kutztown came against nationally-ranked No. 10 Fairleigh Dickinson. The Golden Bears dropped the first three games before putting forth a strong 214 in game four, but the Knights closed it out with a 170-160 decision in game five and won the match 952-797.
The Maroon and Gold avenged Saturday's traditional format loss to Molloy by defeating the Lions, 4-2, in a best-of-7 Baker match for fifth place. Wagner, Sipe, Brenneman, Wunch and Sromovski took care of business for the Bears, opening up a 3-0 lead in the series with consecutive 200+ games. KU rolled a match-best 226 in the opener for a convincing 226-160 win, before taking game two, 209-182, and game three, 201-193.
Molloy stayed alive with back-to-back wins in the fourth and fifth, but another 200 game by the Golden Bears lifted the hosts to a 201-162 win that ended the match.
Caldwell captured the tournament title by beating Fairleigh Dickinson in a modified Baker tiebreaker, 94-93, after the teams split their best-of-7, 3.5-3.5.
Kutztown will head north to Buffalo, N.Y., two weekends from now to compete in the Medaille Invitational, Nov. 5-6.
