Rushing offense and defense lead KU to homecoming victory over Lock Haven

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown football rushed for a season-best 289 yards and KU's defense allowed just 13 yards on the ground, giving Kutztown a 35-7 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division win over Lock Haven Saturday afternoon in front of a large crowd for homecoming at Andre Reed Stadium.

A crowd of 4,400 fans watched as the Golden Bears (6-2 overall, 4-1 PSAC) won for the fourth time in-a-row and have not lost in the month of October.

The 289 rushing yards on offense is the most since the PSAC Championship win over Slippery Rock last year on Nov. 13. The Maroon and Gold defense has given up less than 20 yards rushing for the third time this season and second game in-a-row, holding Shippensburg to just 18 yards last weekend. The Bald Eagles (1-7, 0-5) had 24 rushing attempts and averaged just 0.5 yards per carry against a stingy KU defense that ranks second in the PSAC, giving up just 66.3 yards per game on the ground.

All five Kutztown touchdowns came via the rushing attack. Darryl Davis-McNeil (Roslyn, Pa./Abington) finished with 147 yards on 15 carries and three TDs, his third multi-score game this season. Him and Jordan Davis (Franklin, N.J./Saint Joseph Metuchen) each found the endzone in the first quarter on back-to-back possessions within 2:17 of each other to put KU out in front 14-0. Davis was six yards shy of 100, finishing with 94 on the day.

Davis-McNeil and quarterback Donny Blaine (Jefferson Township, Pa./North Pocono) both scored from two yards out in the second quarter to bring KU's advantage to 28-0 into halftime. Davis-McNeil capped the scoring for the Golden Bears with a 10-yard run 2:54 into the third quarter to push the lead to 35-0. From there, Kutztown's defense kept Lock Haven at bay, outside of a fourth quarter touchdown run from a yard away by Matt Stanton.

Tom Griese (Dover, N.J./Morris Knolls) led the way defensively with five tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Nigel Wilson (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) and Tyler Whary (Hereford, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) each recorded four tackles and one sack, also combining for three tackles for loss. Kyle Sapp (Westampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) contributed three tackles, one tackle for loss and 0.5 sack.

Blaine was 8-of-15 for 90 yards through the air. Jerome Kapp (Barto, Pa./Boyertown) had four receptions for 65 yards.

Kutztown is at Millersville next Saturday, Oct. 29, at noon, looking for its fifth straight victory.
