LOCK HAVEN, Pa. --Â Kutztown University captured two PSAC East weekly awards Monday afternoon when quarterback
Judd Novak (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) was named Athlete of the Week and linebacker
LJ Smith (Newark, Del./Salesianum) Defensive Athlete of the Week by the league office.
Novak and Smith each earned their first weekly honor of the season after helping the third-ranked Golden Bears to a 41-14 Homecoming victory over West Chester last Saturday.
Novak accounted for five touchdowns, throwing for three and running for two while racking up a game-high 116 rushing yards. The fifth-year senior opened the scoring on Kutztown's second play from scrimmage finding a gap up the middle and outracing the WCU defense for a 70-yard TD run.
Novak found
Noah Kracyla (Townsend, Del./Middletown) for an 8-yard TD pass on the Golden Bears' next possession to make it 14-0.
The reigning PSAC East Athlete of the Year and Harlon Hill Trophy finalist scored on a 13-yard run and connected with
Rich Paczewski (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) for a 15-yard TD strike just before the half to extend KU's lead to 34-7.
Novak capped his big afternoon with a 6-yard TD pass to
Ty'renne Hynson (Middletown, Del./Middletown) early in the fourth as the Bears went over the 40-point mark for the fourth consecutive game and sixth time in eight games this season. Novak entered the game tied for second in program history in career TD passes with Andy Breault and now holds sole possession of second behind only Kevin Morton (119).
Novak finished 11-of-16 passing for 158 yards and 3 TDs. He rushed five times for 116 yards and 2 TDs, averaging 23.2 yards per carry.
Smith registered a game-high eight tackles (five solo), 1.5 tackles for loss and two pass breakups during Saturday's win. He made an immediate impact with two tackles and a pass breakup on the Golden Rams' first possession to help force a three-and-out. KU scored on its ensuing possession to go up 14-0 less than six minutes into the game.
The sophomore linebacker added three tackles, including one for loss, and a breakup during a third quarter in which WCU held the ball for more than 11 minutes.
Among a balanced defensive unit, Smith currently ranks second for the season with 33 tackles (24 solo) and second with 5.5 tackles for loss. He's also forced a fumble.
Kutztown travels to East Stroudsburg this coming Saturday, Oct. 31, for a 1:05 p.m. kickoff.
