Women’s volleyball rallies past first-place East Stroudsburg in five sets

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Behind double-doubles from Adrianna Derstine (Barto, Pa./Boyertown), Sadie Doss (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) and Lexi Morrow (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry), Kutztown University women's volleyball twice overcame a one-set deficit to knock off Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division leader East Stroudsburg, 3-2 (19-25, 25-18, 19-25, 25-15, 15-9), Friday night at Keystone Arena.

For the second time in as many meetings this season, the Golden Bears and Warriors went the distance. Kutztown (11-8, 5-3 PSAC East) took the opening two sets before falling 3-2 at ESU back on Sept. 16. This time, the Warriors (12-9, 6-2 PSAC East) won the first and third sets, but could not slow the Golden Bears' momentum in the fourth and fifth, when they were outscored a combined 40-24.

The victory was also Kutztown's first over the Warriors in 13 matches, dating back to 2016.

Derstine, a freshman outside hitter and the reigning PSAC East Athlete of the Week, shined yet again for KU, ending the match with 23 kills, 15 digs and a .310 hitting percentage on 58 attempts. She also chipped in two block assists defensively. It's the second-most kills in a match for the Boyertown grad this season following her season-high 29-kill performance in the previous match against West Chester. Doss put forth 16 kills to go along with 13 digs.

Morrow tacked on 46 assists and 11 digs for the Golden Bears, going over 1,800 assists for her career (1,809) as she pursues Kimberlee Gomber (1,903) for seventh on KU's all-time leaders list.

Gianna Agosti (Nesquehoning, Pa./Marian Catholic) led the defensive effort for KU in the match with 19 digs. Junior Grace Ingram (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) made her presence felt at the net, notching five blocks along with four kills.

Both teams pulled away from each other in the sets they won, with the closest margin being six points in the first and fifth sets. Once it got to the fourth set, KU started to establish the upper hand in the match, going on a 15-5 run to take the set after a back-and-forth beginning. Once the fifth set began, the Golden Bears jumped out to a 10-3 advantage and ran away with the final set and the victory.

It's a massive win for the Golden Bears, who moved into sole possession of third-place in the East under first-year head coach Allison Keeley after being picked seventh of eight teams in the league's preseason poll. KU has now one four of its last five matches, with the last two being five-set victories. The Maroon and Gold play four of their final six regular season matches at home.

KU is back in action at Keystone Arena next Friday, Oct. 21, against Shippensburg. Match time is 7 p.m.
