KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team bounced back from dropping the opening set to take the next two, but was unable to finish off Shippensburg as the Raiders took the last two sets, including trailing in the final one as KU fell in five sets Friday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division competition at Keystone Arena.
Â
It was the third straight match that has gone to five sets for the Golden Bears (11-9 overall, 5-4 PSAC) and it snapped a two-match win streak in conference, tied for a season-high. KU was looking for an in-season sweep of Shippensburg, having taken the previous matchup at Ship 3-1, but the Raiders (13-11, 5-4) had other ideas and erased an 8-4 deficit in the final set to earn the victory.
Â
Sadie Doss (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) and
Adrianna Derstine (Barto, Pa./Boyertown) both finished higher than any Raiders hitter, totaling 19 and 16 kills respectively. Doss also led the Maroon and Gold with 25 digs and four aces and added three assists. Derstine also recorded 12 digs and three blocks.
Jasmine Mooney (Lehighton, Pa./Marian Catholic) tallied 13 digs.
Grace Ingram (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) led KU with five blocks.
Lexi Morrow (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) contributed 56 assists and two blocks, and
Gianna Agosti (Nesquehoning, Pa./Marian Catholic) added 24 digs, two aces and one assist.
Â
Shippensburg jumped out with a win in the opening set, but Kutztown quickly regrouped and took the next two by increasing its hitting percentage. The Raiders, however, did not fold and was able to win the final two sets to come away victors.
Â
Kutztown will look to amass some revenge on Shepherd, which defeated KU in straight sets back on Sept. 24, when the two meet tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 22, at 1 p.m.
