DOUGLASSVILLE, Pa. -- The Kutztown University women's bowling team started its season by going 2-1 in a head-to-head matchup against Chestnut Hill Saturday at Jay Lanes.

The two teams squared off in two Baker matches, followed by a best-of-seven Baker series. Kutztown emerged with victories in the five-game Baker matches, while Chestnut Hill claimed the best-of-seven series, 4.5-2.5.

Alyssa Blood (Birdsboro, Pa./Daniel Boone),
Shelby Wunch (Easton, Md./Easton),
Jordan Dean (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor),
Eleni Feggulis (South River, N.J./South River) and
Chloe Sromovski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) in the set of Baker matches and the Golden Bear quintet totaled 895 scores in both matches.

In the first match, KU posted a high score of 220 in the second of five games. The Bears outscored Chestnut Hill by 40 pins in that game to go in front and never relinquished the lead in an 895-846 victory.

Kutztown came out strong in the second, opening with a 203-155 victory to put the Griffins in a sizable hole. Though CHC gained some pins back in games two and three, KU won the fourth and concluded the match with a commanding 220-155 victory in game five to make it 895-812 at the finish.

Freshman
Meghan Ripley (Bel Air, Md./Fallston), who made her collegiate debut along with Wunch, entered the lineup for the best-of-7 series along with Blood, Dean, Wunch and Sromovski.

The Golden Bears and Griffins went back and forth in a hotly contested match. Chestnut Hill won the opening game 197-184, but KU bounced back with a 159-152 victory in game two. The teams tied game three, 169-all, before CHC regained the lead with a game four win.

KU's match-high 192 in game five evened the match once again, 2.5-2.5, but the Griffins had their best performance in game six with a 232 and went on to win game seven as well for a 4.5-2.5 decision.

The Golden Bears travel to New Castle, Del., next weekend for the Bud Whitman Memorial.
