Cold shooting night dooms No. 24 Kutztown at Bloomsburg

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – It had been 47 days since the last time the 24th-ranked Kutztown University women's basketball team suffered a loss. Everything had been working for KU in the nearly two-month span, winners of nine straight, but a cold shooting night finally came and it led to a 62-52 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division loss at Bloomsburg University Wednesday night.

The Golden Bears (15-4 overall, 8-2 PSAC) had the second longest-win streak in program history, winners of nine straight. The last defeat came on Friday, Dec. 3, against then-No. 10 Indiana (Pa.).

Kutztown struggled shooting from the floor against the Huskies (10-7, 8-3), finishing the night 19-of-51 (37.3%) overall and 4-for-17 (23.5%) from three-point land, the latter was the lowest total of the season. That hurt KU in this one as Bloomsburg made twice as many three's (8-of-19) in pulling out the victory.

Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Casey Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) tallied nine points and 13 rebounds, just missing her second straight double-double. Alexis Smith (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin) also recorded nine points for the Golden Bears.

Kutztown and Bloomsburg were back-and-forth in the opening quarter with the Huskies holding a slim 13-12 advantage after one. BU began to take over the contest in the second quarter, outscoring KU 19-9 over the 10-minute frame and took a 32-21 lead into halftime.

The Maroon and Gold fought back in the third, tying the game at 36 after two Remolde free-throws with 1:26 left. But the Huskies netted five straight to finish out the period.

Derr connected on a jumper 3:36 into the fourth to cut the deficit to 43-42 with 6:24 remaining, but that was the closest they would get the rest of the way.

Zara Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) recorded six points and three rebounds. Annie Whalen (Ivyland, Pa./Archbishop Wood) had five points and both Abbey Hearn (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) and Naia Pulliam (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) rounded out the scoring for KU with four points each.

Kutztown hosts Shepherd, which sits in second place in the East Division, on Saturday, Jan. 22, at 1 p.m., at Keystone Arena.
