Male throws complete game shutout as Kutztown takes one of two vs. Shippensburg

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Freshman pitcher Zach Male (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) of the Kutztown University baseball team had himself a day. He threw a complete game, shutout in defeating Shippensburg University 7-0 in game one of a Friday afternoon doubleheader at North Campus Field. The Raiders bounced back to take game two 8-3 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division action.
 
The Golden Bears (14-12 overall, 8-12 PSAC) were able to bounce back after losing both on the road at Shippensburg on Thursday.
 
The seven innings thrown by Male is a season-high as he finished with four strikeouts and allowed just four hits for his fourth victory on the year, sitting at 4-1. He threw 96 pitches and sat down the Raiders in order, three different innings.
 
Zach Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) went 5-for-7 at the plate on the day, going 3-for-3 in game two, and added an RBI and run scored. Ethan Martini (Feasterville-Trevose, Pa./Father Judge) and Mike Piscotty (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Hanover Area) each finished with three hits, and both Connor Teschko (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) and Dominic Proietto (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) had two hits.
 
Kutztown hosts East Stroudsburg University for a double header on Friday, April 16.
 
Kutztown 7, Shippensburg 0

In the bottom of the second Kutztown would load the bases up with two outs in the inning with three singles. Gavin Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) would manage to bring in a run on an infield single, taking a one run lead.
 
The score would stay the same until the bottom of the fifth when the Golden Bears would break the game open scoring four runs on three hits in the inning. With bases loaded Piscotty would single to right field scoring two runners. Teschko would single loading the bases again, Mitchell Peers (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) and Piscotty would both score after two wild pitches by the Shippensburg pitcher.
 
The Bears would manage to score two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. One run would score on a bases loaded walk by Proietto, another would come around to score on a single by Peers to right field.
 
Male was dominant in his start allowing only four hits and one walk in his complete game shutout. Male moves to 4-1 on the year, Kaleb Sophy takes the loss for Shippensburg and is now 1-2 on the season.

Shippensburg 8, Kutztown 3

Shippensburg would take an early lead scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. The Raiders would score two runs on a bases loaded single by Justin Darden. They would score two more in the top of the second on two hits and two errors by the Golden Bear defense taking  4-0 lead.
 
In the bottom of the fourth Kutztown would cut the lead in half scoring two runs on three hits in the inning. Z. Moretski would bring in the first run on his single to center field and would eventually come around to score on a single through the left side by Proietto.
 
The Raiders quickly answered with two runs of their own in the top of the fifth inning. Ben Werkheiser led off the inning with a solo homerun to right field.
 
The Golden Bears would score another in the bottom half of the inning, Martini would single home Piscotty on a line drive to center field.
 
Shippensburg would score one more in the top of the seventh, taking an 8-3 lead. They would go on to shut out the Golden Bears in the bottom-half of the inning sealing the win.
 
Gabe Stolter remains undefeated on the year moving to 3-0, G. Moretski takes the loss for Kutztown now 2-2 on the season.
